Notable Allegations of Abuse at Shelterwood Academy
Behind its image of faith and healing, Shelterwood Academy concealed a much darker reality. Serious allegations of abuse, misconduct, and negligence have surfaced, revealing the painful experiences endured by vulnerable young people who were entrusted to its care. These are not isolated incidents either, they reveal a pattern of betrayal and systemic failure to protect those who were meant to find safety and healing within its walls.
- In 2024, a former student took to social media, describing their time at Shelterwood as “particularly hellish” and recounting experiences of prolonged isolation and enforced religious practices that left them emotionally scarred. These accounts echo similar stories from other survivors who have come forward, shedding light on a culture of control and manipulation that went unchecked for far too long.
- By 2022, Shelterwood Academy closed its doors permanently. This closure came amidst growing scrutiny of unregulated boarding schools in Missouri and a series of abuse allegations against similar institutions across the state. The closure did not erase the pain or the stories shared by survivors. Instead, it fueled a broader movement calling for increased oversight and regulation of private boarding schools to protect vulnerable youth from further harm.
- In 2021, a lawsuit was filed against Shelterwood Academy, accusing an employee, Demarquice Phillips, of sexual assault. The lawsuit alleged that despite multiple complaints, including reports directly from the victim, Shelterwood allowed Phillips to continue mentoring vulnerable girls, failing to protect them from harm. This lawsuit brought to light significant concerns about the academy’s oversight and response to serious allegations.

About Shelterwood Academy
Shelterwood Academy, now operating as Embark Behavioral Health, is a Christian therapeutic boarding school located on a 200-acre campus near Independence, Missouri, just east of Kansas City. Founded to help at-risk adolescents, Shelterwood presented itself as a place of healing and growth, offering structured programs designed to address behavioral challenges while promoting faith-based values. The academy combined accredited education with one-on-one mentoring, small class sizes, and group discussions to provide a supportive learning environment.
The program was designed for teens to stay between nine months to a year, focusing on building healthy peer and family relationships. Students participated in a variety of recreational activities while receiving counseling support through evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Family involvement was also emphasized, with regular communication and therapy sessions aimed at rebuilding trust and connection.
Promoting itself as a place of Christian guidance and holistic healing, Shelterwood claimed to provide struggling teens with a path to recovery and personal growth. But behind the outward appearance of faith and care, a much more complex story began to unfold.
