Multiple former patients of Forest View Hospital have come forward to file civil lawsuits alleging sexual abuse and neglect at the facility. July 2020 – UHS $117M Settlement & Federal Oversight
UHS, the parent company of Forest View Hospital, agreed to pay $117M to settle federal and state allegations of health care fraud and inadequate care at its behavioral facilities (including Forest View). Investigators found that between 2007 and 2018, UHS psychiatric hospitals improperly kept patients hospitalized longer than medically necessary, admitted people who didn’t meet inpatient criteria, billed for services not provided, and failed to maintain adequate staffing, training, and supervision to ensure patient safety.
2019 – State Cites Forest View for Not Reporting a Patient’s Rape Allegation
A 52-year-old female patient at Forest View Hospital reported that she had been sexually assaulted by two employees of the hospital. Heidi Parent-Leonard, a former social worker at Forest View, filed a federal whistleblower lawsuit under the False Claims Act, naming Forest View Psychiatric Hospital. Hired as a case manager, Parent-Leonard observed alarming practices: she alleged the hospital was billing Medicare and Medicaid for “therapy” sessions that were as brief as a few minutes per patient, and that administrators were keeping patients hospitalized longer than necessary (or admitting those who didn’t truly need inpatient care) to maximize insurance payments.
September 2017 – Patient Charged for the Sexual Assaults of Two Women
A 32-year-old male patient, Kosygin McNeely, was charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct after two women were assaulted inside Forest View Hospital. McNeely had a preexisting record of criminal history (including a prior kidnapping charge), and had been admitted to Forest View for treatment as a result. During his time at Forest View, he cornered a female patient in a locked bathroom stall and sexually assaulted her, according to court records. Shortly afterward, McNeely groped a second female patient in a public hallway of the facility. Both attacks occurred in areas that were supposed to be safe and actively monitored by staff.
